Abstract: This talk is aimed at researchers who employ high-power lasers to characterize nonlinear optical phenomena, in particular, nonlinear absorption in materials. It starts with an introduction to nonlinear optics and basic physics for multiphoton absorption, excited-state absorption, reverse saturable absorption, saturable absorption and free carrier absorption. The talk covers four characterization techniques: namely, (1) nonlinear transmission; (2) open-aperture Z-scan; (3) multiphoton-excited photoluminescence; and (4) multiphoton-excited photocurrent. The advantages and problems of these characterization techniques are discussed. A number of examples will be illustrated.
